Vietnam Veterans Memorial - Emmet Park on Bay Street

 

Located off of Bay Street, this park was named for Irish patriot Robert Emmet.  Here you will find the old City Exchange Bell, a Vietnam Veterans Memorial, a Hussars' Memorial from the Siege of Savannah and a gas powered Harbor Light which was used to navigate ships into the Savannah River.

 

Colonial Park Cemetery

 

Over 700 Savannahians were buried in this cemetery between 1750 and 1853 as a result of the Yellow Fever epidemic. Find historical plaques which mark graves of important early colonists, such as one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Button Gwinnett. After Union soldiers vandalized the cemetery, the broken headstones were cemented to the rear wall. Today, the cemetery is a public park. Open daily from 9–5. Free.
 

Marine Veterans Monument - Forsyth Park on Gaston Street

 

Walk around the beautiful gardens at Forsyth Park and enjoy the cast iron fountain made in New York in 1858, the Canadian Sandstone monument featuring confederate soldier Archibald McLeish, busts of General Lafayette McLaws and Brig. General Francis S.Bartow and a bronze soldier commemorating Georgians who died in the Spanish –American War.
 

Bonaventure Cemetery

 

One of the most beautiful cemeteries in Savannah, Bonaventure features unique tombstones and is the final resting spot for many important figures in Savannah’s history. Founding members of Savannah such as Noble Wimberly Jones and Edward Telfair are buried in Bonaventure Cemetery as well as Civil War Generals Robert J. Anderson, Henry R. Jackson, Alexander R. Lawton, Hugh W. Mercer, Claudius C. Wilson and Commodore Josiah Tattnall. Most notably, singer Johnny Mercer and poet Conrad Aiken were laid to rest at Bonaventure.

Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum

 

Founded in 1966, Ships of the Sea exhibits ship models, paintings and maritime antiques, principally from the great era of Atlantic trade and travel between England and America during the 18th and 19th centuries.  For more information on this venue, call 912.232.1511.
 

Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum

 

The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum preserves for all Americans the stories of courage, character and patriotism displayed by the men and women of the Eighth Air Force from World War II to the present. Using state-of-the-art graphics, memorabilia, vintage motion pictures and photographs and interactive "live-it-yourself" features, the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum is a work of art by itself.
