The Pirates' House Restaurant, a fun and historic restaurant, served as an inn for seafarers since1753and became a favorite haunt of pirates and other nefarious visitors. It is said that Captain Flint, made notorious in the book Treasure Island, died in an upstairs room here in the company of his first mate, Billy Bones. It is rumored that there are tunnels that extend from underneath the restaurant to the Savannah River where boat
captains shanghaied unwary and very drunk seamen to complete their crews. The historic building's present incarnation, The Pirate's House, maintains the original features of the structure and preserves pirate artifacts and other memorabilia in its 15 dining rooms. Old Fort Jackson, properly named Fort James Jackson, has been a part of Coastal Georgia's history for nearly two centuries. Named in honor of Georgia governor and Revolutionary Way soldier James Jackson, the fort is the oldest standing brick fortification in the state. Fort Jackson is also a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. The fort is one of only eight Second System fortifications (a series of forts built prior to the War of 1812) still standing in the United States. Oatland Island Wildlife Center is situated approximately halfway between downtown Savannah and Tybee Island. Here you can see many indigenous animals,including Georgia farm animals, bison, alligators, and bobcats, lots of sea life and explore plant life. Tybee Island Tybee means "salt" to Native Americans, but the name of this low-key seaside resort now brings to mind words such as "sun," "sand" and "fun." At the Roundhouse Railroad Museum there is plenty for the kids to do! They have a wonderful collection of trains and there is some great history in the museum and its exhibits. It is also very affordable! Visit their website for more information.
